  • [01] European and world leaders congratulate President-elect Anastasiades

    Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, MP Theresa Villiers congratulated Nikos Anastasiades for winning the Presidential Elections in the Republic of Cyprus, adding that the new President will have many challenges to deal with, "not least the request for loans from the EU and IMF to support the Cyprus economy".

    According to another announcement, European and world leaders have sent congratulatory letters to Nikos Anastasiades, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, German President Joachim Gauck, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Premier of Spain Mariano Rajoy Brey, UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Finnish PM Jyrki Katainen.

    The official announcement adds that Anastasiades also received a telegram from UK Foreign Secretary William Hague congratulating him on his election, while the Ambassador of Georgia conveyed a message of congratulations on behalf of his country's President, Gaioz Japaridze.
