  • [01] Cyprus government satisfied with Eurogroup outcome

    The government of Cyprus is satisfied with the outcome of Monday's Eurogroup meeting in Brussels, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides has said.

    In statements on Tuesday to the press, Stylianides referred to Monday's Eurogroup meeting which examined Cyprus' application for financial assistance by the European Stability Mechanism.

    Under the circumstances, Stylianides said, Cyprus did very well, adding that the new Finance Minister Michalis Sarris gave "a very tough battle."

    [02] Minister of Commerce to hold contacts in Berlin

    Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Giorgos Lakkotripis will hold a series of meetings in the German capital in the framework of a visit in the international tourist fair ITB, in Berlin.

    The new Minister of Tourism will meet with representatives of air companies and the main trip organizers of Germany.

    According to an official press release, the Minister will discuss issues in the field of tourism.

    [03] English School in Nicosia in top 5%, based on ALPS survey

    The English School Nicosia announced that the Advanced Level Performance Systems (ALPS) has placed it in the top 5% of 1.251 schools and colleges for outstanding performance in AS and A2 examinations.

    According to a press released, ALPS is a performance analysis database tool used by approximately 1.200 schools and colleges in the UK (70% of all A levels taken in the UK).

    It analyses student potential in terms of target grades, in external examinations, and their actual achievement. These target grades, according to the statement, are created from a UK database of approximately 1.000.000 AS and A2 level results from approximately 380.000 students.

    [04] Rehn: Troika works for achievement of a Cyprus bailout deal in March

    Vice President of the European Commission, Olli Rehn, has said that the Troika works for the achievement of an agreement on a Cyprus bailout in March.

    In statements on Tuesday to the press after the conclusion of the ECOFIN Council, Rehn referred to the Eurogroup meeting which took place Monday in Brussels.

    He noted that after the Eurogroup meeting additional meetings took place during which it was agreed that a Troika team (European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund) would return to Cyprus to discuss with the Cypriot authorities with the aim to reach an agreement.

    [05] Troika and CSE delegations meet in Nicosia

    Technocrats from the Troika (IMF, ECB, EC) and the Directors of Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) discussed on Tuesday issues of corporate governance, expenditures, development plans and strategic partnerships of CSE.

    The meeting, which held in the framework of the meetings between Troika technocrats and Cyprus semi-governmental organizations, took place at the Ministry of Finance.

    Speaking after the meeting, Nondas Metaxas, CSE General Director said that, apart from the issue of corporate governance, the discussion focused on CSE operational costs. "We showed them the reduction on CSE operational costs during the last couple of years", he said.
