[01] Eurogroup must find a fairer solution for Cyprus, Verhofstadt says
The Eurogroup must find a fairer solution with the Government of Cyprus
than placing an unfair burden of responsibility on ordinary Cypriot
bank depositors for the debts accrued by the reckless behaviour of the
Cypriot banks.
This was stressed by Guy Verhofstadt, President of the ALDE Group in
the European Parliament, who was commenting on the proposed terms for
the Cypriot adjustment programme, following the terms agreed early on
Saturday morning between the Cypriot Government and the Eurogroup of
Finance Ministers.
"Eurogroup's proposal is neither fair nor effective. It contradicts
EU law on deposit guarantees and opens the doors to major uncertainty
and instability amongst savers across Europe whose banking sector is
in difficulty, making bank runs more, not less, likely in the future",
he notes.
