[01] UNSG to meet with Downer
United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is expected to meet at the
UN headquarters with his Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alexander Downer.
The Australian former Foreign Minister arrived in New York on Monday
and had already met with the UN Undersecretary General for Political
Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, members of the UN Secretariat team dealing
with the Cyprus issue and the permanent representatives of Britain,
France and China, while he will meet with U.S. permanent representative.
[02] Deposit protection scheme should be respected, says Cameron
British Prime Minister David Cameron told Commons that London "made
it very clear to the Cyprus government that when you have a deposit
protection scheme, such as the one the UK and all of Europe have, it
should be respected."
He was referring to the Eurogroup decision on a one-off levy on all
deposits in banks on Cyprus soil, including ones under the 100,000 euro
guarantee limit.
The proposed measure was rejected by the House of Representative sin
Nicosia on Tuesday. Responding to the Labour leader's questions, the
Prime Minister said that respect of such schemes for the protection of
small savers was "the whole point".
[03] Banks will remain closed Thursday and Friday
Banks will remain closed Thursday and Friday, to secure financial
stability, a statement by the Finance Ministry says.
In the statement issued Wednesday, the Ministry notes that "subsequently
to the rejection of the Bill for the imposition of a fee on deposits,
by the House of Representatives, it is deemed necessary, on grounds of
public interest in order to ensure financial stability, to declare the
21st and 22nd of March 2013 as a bank holiday".
It is added that during the bank holiday, no banking transactions will
be carried out.
