  • [01] Cyprus banks will accept the deposit of government checks, an announcement by the Treasury of the Republic says.

    It is added that government services and independent offices will accept checks by all financial institutions under certain conditions.

    These provide for checks up to 5,000 euros to be acceptable without any restrictions, while checks above this limit and up to 200,000 euros will be acceptable upon the approval of the Central Bank Committee, which was set up in accordance with the relevant law imposing restrictions on financial transactions.

    [02] Revenue from tourism in 2012 shows increase of 10,2%

    Revenue from tourism last year showed an increase of 10,2%.

    According to figures by the Cyprus Statistical Service, for the period January - December 2012 revenue from tourism is estimated to €1.927,7 mn compared to €1.749,3 mn in the corresponding period of 2011.

    The above data show an increase of 10,2%.

    [03] Cyprus' euro zone partners ambushed it, says former Central Bank Governor

    Former Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus from 2007 to 2012, refers to an "ambush" by Cyprus' euro zone partners as regards the agreement reached at Eurogroup level in the early hours of Monday morning.

    In an interview with the Economist and asked to determine the causes of the crisis Mr Orphanides says that it was a number of factors that have played a role.

    He lists the global global financial crisis and exposure to Greece that made Cyprus vulnerable.
