  • [01] Commission: Low absorbency of EU funds by Cyprus

The rate of absorbency of EU funds by Cyprus was lower than the average for the EU, according to the European Commission`s Strategic Report on the implementation of 2007-2013 Cohesion Policy programmes.

According to the Report, Cyprus could utilise €612.4 million for the period 2007-2013. By January 2013, the Cypriot authorities had absorbed €243.1 million or 39.7% of the total, with the average EU standing at 42.4%.

Regarding the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund, by January 2013 Cyprus had absorbed 40% of the €492.6 million, while regarding the European Social Fund, which funds programmes for employment, combating poverty and social exclusion, and promoting vocational training, Cyprus had absorbed 28.4% of the €119.7 million by January 2013.

[02] EU Speakers Conference to be held in Nicosia

The role of national parliaments in enhancing social cohesion during times of austerity will be among the issues on the agenda of the EU Speakers Conference, which will take place in Nicosia from April 21 to 23.

The Conference will be attended by the presidents and vice-presidents of parliaments of EU member states, as well as the President of the European Parliament. Also present will be the presidents of the parliaments of Croatia, Iceland, Montenegro and FYROM. A total of 220 delegates from abroad are expected.

President of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus Yiannakis Omirou referred to the Eurogroup decision on Cyprus and pointed out that the parliaments cannot be left in the dark and be asked to merely vote in favour of measures that have been decided through non-transparent procedures, especially when these measures destroy the structure of the society.

[03] Greece and Cyprus discuss cooperation in shipping

Cooperation between Greece and Cyprus in the sector of shipping, the European Territorial Cooperation programme, and international legislative regulations, both in the context of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the EU, were among the issues discussed on Thursday in Athens between Cypriot Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos and Greek Shipping and Aegean Minister Kostis Mousouroulis.

According to a press release issued by the Embassy of Cyprus to Greece, Mitsopoulos and Mousouroulis agreed to re-activate the technical committee for cooperation between the two Ministries, and joint initiatives to create broader cooperation on an EU level for shipping issues.

They also discussed the ferry link between Greece and Cyprus, and agreed to examine the possibility of a ferry link with Israel.

[04] London Council passes motion in support of Cyprus

The Barnet Council in north London passed a motion on Tuesday condemning the "truly awful attacks" on peoples' savings in Cyprus, describing them as a seriously worrying turn in the response to Europe`s ongoing economic crisis.

The motion was proposed by Councillor Barry Evangeli followed by a contribution in amendment by Councillor Brian Coleman.

The council notes notes that the situation currently facing Cyprus is of great concern to the Borough`s Cypriot community and welcomes the Treasury`s decision to implement a UK protection scheme in support of depositors at the UK Laiki branches and thanks local Conservative MPs for helping to this end.

[05] Slovakia firmly supports Anastasiades, especially through crisis

"firmly supports" President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, "especially now, when you need more solidarity in light of the uncertainty over the impact of the adjustment programme on the real economy," new Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Cyprus Oksana Tomova has said.

Presenting her credentials on Thursday to President Anastasiades, Tomova said she was coming to Cyprus "during a very difficult period," noting that "last Friday the Eurogroup endorsed the international bailout package which means that Cyprus has secured its financing needs for the first time since 2011."

Tomova expressed certainty that "the Cypriot Government, under your wise leadership, will do all that it can in order to re-organise and restart Cyprus' economy."
