  • [01] Minister and MEPs begin campaign to promote Cyprus issues

The Ministry of Communications and Works and Cypriot members of the European Parliament are coordinating efforts to promote Cyprus' interests in the EU on issues that are relevant to the Ministry.

The main issue on the agenda is the need to lift the Turkish embargo on Cypriot flagged ships and planes.

Minister of Communications Tasos Mitsopoulos told reporters after his meeting with MEPs Eleni Theoharous, Andreas Pitsilides, Takis Hadzigeorgiou and Antigoni Papadopoulou that their discussion was useful, adding "we have asked for the contribution and help of our MEPs to handle sensitive issues such as the restrictive measures which Turkey imposes against Cyprus' shipping and aircraft".

[02] Cypriots will stand firm, House President says in his Easter message

House President Yiannakis Omirou conveyed today his certainty that the people of Cyprus will stand firm, despite the difficulties and problems the country is facing. In his message on the occasion of Greek Orthodox Easter, on May 5th, Omirou says it is imperative that everybody who is responsible for the present economic situation and, especially, the banking sector, to be brought to justice.

"We call on our people to maintain their confidence, their boundless strength, their capabilities as well as their faith in the present and the future of our country" he goes on.

[03] Uncollected tax debt at 0.1% of decade turnover, says Inland Revenue Director

Uncollected tax debt amounts to 0.1% of the decade's turnover, Inland Revenue Department Director George Poufos has said.

Poufos, who appeared before the Investigation Committee on the economy, on Thursday, noted that between 2002 and 2012 approximately €17 billion were collected by the Department. The amount of €604 million of uncollected tax debt equals 0.1% of that total, he said.

He further clarified that the Department calculates the debt without interest, which constitutes the main difference it has with the Auditor General. He also said that once bad debt is removed, the number goes down to €400 million.
