Mediterranean [01] EU Commissioner announces "Erasmus for all" for southern MediterraneanThe launch of a new learning mobility program, Erasmus for All, following the success of Erasmus Mundus and Tempus, on January 1st 2014, focusing on Southern Mediterranean countries, was announced here Thursday by Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.The "Information Day on Erasmus for All for Southern Mediterranean countries" took place on Thursday at the University of Nicosia. The program will focus on new Erasmus for All actions and Joint Doctorate within the future Marie Skłodowska-Curie Programme. "Erasmus for All" is the new EU program for education, training, youth and sport proposed by the European Commission on 23 November 2011. The proposal is now under discussion by the Council (27 Member States) and the European Parliament who will take the final decision. Commissioner Vassiliou has said that more details will be revealed next week. The aim is to promote closer relationships with our neighbors and give the opportunity for young people of both shores of the Mediterranean to have this international experience which will increase their employability, Commissioner Vassiliou has stressed. [02] House ratifies cultural agreement with QatarThe Cyprus House plenary ratified unanimously on Thursday an agreement between Cyprus and Qatar on cultural cooperation.The agreement sets the general framework for cooperation between the two countries, including cultural exchanges, seminars and exhibitions, but is dependant on the prevailing financial context. In the present circumstances, it cannot be put in place. The agreement was signed on January 2012 in Nicosia, following a Cabinet decision on November 2011. [03] Parliament Speaker receives New Zealand FMSpeaker of the Parliament Yiannakis Omirou appeared optimistic that Cyprus will overcome financial difficulties and challenges in a meeting he had Thursday with the New Zealand Foreign Minister Murray McCully.An official press release said that Omirou briefed the New Zealand FM on the Cyprus issue stressing that the lack of progress derives from Turkey's intransigence. The Speaker of the Parliament also outlined the problems caused by Turkey's refusal to sign the International Convention on the Law of the Sea and respect Cyprus' sovereignty in its Exclusive Economic Zone. Omirou also stressed that one of Cyprus' main goals is to contribute to safeguarding peace and stability in the Middle East. The New Zealand Foreign Minister reaffirmed the excellent relations between the two countries and welcomed the fact that their cooperation in the framework of international organisations continues to develop. [04] Foreign Minister meets Russian counterpartMinister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides is in Saint Petersburg , to meet with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov.The two Ministers will discuss, inter alia, bilateral relations, the Cyprus problem, energy related issues, as well as regional matters.
