  • [01] Missing persons' relatives not satisfied with CMP

The issue of missing persons is in danger of becoming a typical bureaucratic matter, said the President of the Pancyprian Organisation of Relatives of Undeclared Prisoners and Missing Persons Nicos Sergides.

Sergides, who was speaking Wednesday at the General Assembly of the Organisation, said that as long as the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) limits its work to exhumations and identifications of remains of missing persons, the Organisation is not satisfied as it wants the CMP to carry out substantial investigation into the matter. The relatives need to know what happened then, how, when and why, he noted.

He said that the CMP has not so far made any serious or worthwhile effort to overcome Turkish objections and refusal to carry out a meaningful search. Instead, he indicated, CMP acts in line with the Turkish position to close the matter.

[02] Economic sentiment improves by 1.9 units in June

The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) in Cyprus registered an improvement for the second consecutive month in June, after a record low in April, due to the developments in the financial sector, the University of Cyprus` Economic Research Centre (ERC) said.

The Economic Sentiment Indicator rose in June by 1.9 units compared with May, which is attributed mainly to the climate improvement in the services sector and retail trade.

[03] Committee to be set up for properties in occupied areas

The Council of Ministers decided on Wednesday to set up a committee to look into incentives for Greek Cypriots interested in selling or buying immovable property in the Turkish occupied areas.

Acting Government Spokesman Victoras Papadopoulos said that this was decided in the context of efforts to address the problem created by the increasing number of Greek Cypriots who turn to the so-called immovable property commission in the northern Turkish occupied areas of the Republic for compensation for their properties.
