  • [01] Less flamingos this year in local wetlands

Flamingos wintering in Cypriot wetlands declined in December 2013 compared with the same period of 2012, while during the same period the number of ducks increased substantially.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment, December counting showed 24,000 birds in their majority flamingos which amounted to 15,134, of which 13,600 in Akrotiri Salt Lake, on the southern coast.

The total number of ducks has increased substantially compared with the corresponding period of 2012 and amounted to 5,716.

[02] President attends dinner with British businessmen of the energy sector

The President of the Republic Nicos Anastasiades attended a dinner on Wednesday evening hosted in his honour by the Minister of Energy of the United Kingdom Michael Fallon, at Lancaster House.

Speaking at the event, President Anastasiades said that he is committed to expanding the traditional links shared between Cyprus and the UK to new areas of collaboration. As he noted, this is after all the natural path in the evolution of the deeply rooted relationship between the two countries, featuring on several pillars such as their partnership in the EU and the Commonwealth.

"There are some basic elements that come to mind when we think of Cyprus", said the President. "An island state in Eastern Mediterranean; at a crossing point between Europe, Asia and Africa; a Member State of the European Union at its southeastern corner; a country close and, many times affected, by its historically turbulent neighbourhood and the recent discovery of hydrocarbons off Cyprus' coastline.

[03] Cyprus gears up for Davis Cup tie with Denmark

The Cypriot tennis team is preparing for an away tie with Denmark for the Davis Cup Europe/Africa Group II, to take place on January 31 - February 2.

The Cypriot squad aims at securing victory that would keep Cyprus in the Europe/Africa Group II and it would provide the opportunity to seek a spot in Group I. The winner must secure three of the five matches.

This is the first time the two squads meet in a Davis Cup tie, with Cyprus facing a tough task, as Denmark aims to bounce straight back to Zone Group I, having been relegated at the end of 2013 in a dramatic 2-3 loss to Sweden.
