[01] EU Commissioner Georgieva resigns to take over post at the World Bank

European Commission Vice-PresidentKristalina Georgieva, responsible for Budget and Human Resources, has informed European Commission President Jean-Claude Junckerof her decision to resign from her post as member of the European Commission in order to undertake new responsibilities as of2 January 2017, as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA), known collectively as the World Bank.

Juncker accepted Kristalina Georgieva`s decision to resign "with great regret", stating that the very fact that she has been asked to take a leading role in the World Bank is "an acknowledgment and recognition of her many talents and her professionalism".

EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy High Representative Federica Mogherini said on Friday that the best guarantee for the security of any country in the world is a well-functioning state, and particularly for any member of the EU is being a member of the EU itself.

Mogherini who was responding to a question after deliberations with Foreign Minister Iaonnis Kasoulides in Nicosia, about the EU`s position as regards the issue of security and guarantees in Cyprus, pointed out that it is still for the parties to discuss these issues, adding that it is extremely important that the negotiations see the leaders taking decisions and finding solutions that can benefit the entire island.

"Obviously, the best guarantee for security of any country in the world is a well-functioning state, and particularly for any member of the EU is being a member of the EU itself.
