[01] Government condemns terrorist attacks in Kenya and Tanzania
The Cyprus government condemned strongly last Saturday the recent terrorist
attacks against the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, describing them as
"abhorrent and inhuman acts of violence".
In a condolence letter to US President Bill Clinton, President Glafcos
Clerides condemned these terrorist acts and expressed his sympathy to the
families of the victims for the "tragic loss of their loved ones".
[02] Council of Ministers approves Cyprus participation in Nuclear
Convention
Cyprus participation in a "Convention on Nuclear Security" was approved
last Friday by the Council of Ministers.
By virtue of the Convention's clauses contiguous with Cyprus countries that
dispose of or intend to use nuclear installations are committed to
deliberate with Cyprus and to provide all necessary information for the
correct assessment of the Republic's security in case of nuclear installations
in neighbouring countries.
The Convention is of special interest to Cyprus, since Turkey proposes to
build nuclear installations in the region of Akkuyu,situated at a distance
of less than 100 kilometers from the shores of Cyprus , on the west coast
of Turkey.
[03] Consumer Price Index decreases in July
The Consumer Price Index presented a decrease of 0,48% for the month of
July 1998, compared to the previous month, was announced last Friday by the
Department of Statistics and Research.
The decrease is mainly due to price discounts in clothing, footwear and
furniture items during the sales period. Increases have been recorded in
the prices of certain fresh fruit and electricity.
An increase of 2,17% was recorded for the period January-July 1998 compared
to the corresponding period of the previous year while the Index of July
1998 compared to that of July 1997 showed an increase of 1,36%.
