[01] UN General Assembly approves financing of UNFICYP

The United Nations General Assembly by its resolution A/RES/52/241, approved recently the financing of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

The resolution refers to the Assembly's decision to appropriate to the Special Account of UNFICYP an amount of 45,276,160 dollars gross for the maintenance of the Force for the period from 1 July 1998 to 30 June 1999, inclusive of an amount of 2,267,160 dollars for the support account for peacekeeping operations.

Moreover the resolution states the Assembly's decision to appropriate the amount of 24, 263,860 dollars gross to the Force's Account for the period from 1 July 1998 to 30 June 1999 to be apportioned by Member States, taking into consideration that one third of the cost of the force is covered through fundings by the Government of Cyprus.

Greece's annual contribution amounts to 6.5 million dollars.

UNFICYP was first established in Cyprus, following Security Council Resolution 186 (4 March 1964), which recommends the establishment of UNFICYP with a mandate to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of peace on the island.

[02] Water levels down to 10 per cent

Water levels have fallen to 10 per cent of the total capacity of the dams, according to figures released yesterday. The figures prompt fears the water supplies will run out by the end of the year, if there is no rainfall.

Kouris, the island's largest dam contains only 5.8, million cubic metres of water, representing 5.1 per cent of its total capacity.

The Asprokremmos dam holds just 24 per cent of its total capacity, and the Evretou dam 15.1 per cent.

Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Costas Themistocleous announced last week that the government was taking measures to solve the water problem, including plans for the introduction of mobile desalination plants.
