[01] Cyprus government expresses satisfaction with EU Council decision

Cyprus Spokesman Mr Christos Stylianides expressed satisfaction with the European Union Foreign Ministers' decision to start substantive accession negotiations with the six candidate countries including Cyprus.

In a statement to the press yesterday, Mr Stylianides, stressing the importance of the decision, said that it is a step towards the realisation of the Cypriot people's vision for their country's accession to the European Union. This accession , he added, will safeguard the future of the Republic of Cyprus.

Mr Stylianides pointed out that the beginning of substantive negotiations on seven main chapters reinforces the belief that the Cyprus accession course is well on the way.

Moreover he noted that the unanimity of the decision constitutes a proof that the European Union's institutions are acting favourably towards Cyprus' accession process.

The Government Spokesman reiterated that President Clerides' proposal for Turkish Cypriot participation in the accession negotiations remains on the table and expressed the hope that the Turkish Cypriot community will accept and embrace this European vision.

[02] Violations of Cyprus airspace by Turkish military aircraft

The Cyprus Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Sotos Zackheos has strongly protested to the UN against new violations of the national airspace of the Republic of Cyprus and of the flight information region of Nicosia by Turkish military aircraft, on 17, 18 and 29 September 1998.

In a letter dated 30 September, addressed to the United Nations Secretary General, the Cyprus Ambassador stressed that these provocative Turkish acts against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus are in blatant disregard of international law, the UN Charter and the relevant UN decisions on Cyprus.

Mr Zackheos also stated that the continuing overflights by the Turkish Air Force and the presence of the Turkish military occupation forces on the island constitute the underlying causes of tension in Cyprus.
