[01] Cyprus' accession to the EU will establish permanent peace on the
island
The Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Mr Costas
Themistocleous expressed the hope that the accession of Cyprus to the EU
"will foster the establishment or permanent peace for the benefit of the
Cyprus people as a whole".
Mr Themistocleous, who was addressing yesterday the opening ceremony of the
international seminar "Labour Policy Development and Social Dialogue in
Central and Eastern Europe" in his capacity as Acting Labour and Social
Insurance Minister, noted that "Cyprus has developed very good systems in
the fields of labour administration and tripartite co-operation that can be
used as models for other countries".
He added that the government in a bid to achieve the active participation
of all social partners in labour administration has established tripartite
consultative bodies covering all spheres of activity in labour and social
affairs, the most important of which being the Labour Consultative
Body.
Moreover Mr. Themistocleous stressed that "the government bases its labour
and social policy on the principle of social justice in conditions of
economic freedom".
The seven day international seminar is organised by the Mediterranean
Institute of Management (MIME) and the International Labour Office (ILO).
Some 25 participants from 9 countries of Eastern and Central Europe
participate in this year's seminar.
[02] UN-sponsored shuttle talks begin tomorrow
Government Spokesman Mr Christos Stylianides has confirmed tomorrow's
meeting between the President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides and the
UN Deputy Special Representative Dame Ann Hercus.
The meeting is the result of the UN Secretary General's initiative after
contacts he held with President Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf
Denktash last month in New York , aimed at developing "a process for on-
island contacts with both parties, with the goal of reducing tensions and
promoting progress towards a just and lasting settlement."
