Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-01-19Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Tuesday, 19 January 1999CONTENTS[01] Cyprus and Greece sign labour co-operation programmeThe Minister of Labour and Social Insurance Andreas Moushoutas and his Greek counterpart Miltiades Papaioannou, signed yesterday a two-year Co- operation Programme in labour issues, including employment, health and safety in the workplace, industrial relations and training.Speaking to the press, after the signing of the programme, Mr. Moushoutas said that the programme outlines specific ways of co-operation in the labour field and in the field of vocational training and covers wider issues regarding Cyprus' process of accession to the EU. "The experience and knowledge of the Greek Labour and Social Insurance Ministry will be invaluable to us," he added. On his part, Mr. Papaioannou reassured his Cypriot counterpart of his country's will to help Nicosia in its process of harmonisation with European Union rules and regulations in this field. The Greek Minister said Athens could provide Cyprus with the know-how "regarding the situation in Europe and Greece on employment policies" and other matters such as "harmonising tax laws with the EU, issues of concern to people with special needs and transborder issues". Mr.Papaioannou, who is on a four-day official visit, held meetings earlier in the day with President Glafcos Clerides, the Primate of the Church Archbishop Chrysostomos and the President of the House of Representatives Spyros Kyprianou. [02] South Australian leader launches Commonwealth initiative on CyprusSouth Australian Labour Party leader Mr. Mike Rann proposed that the Cyprus problem should be the keynote issue at this year's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Cape Town, South Africa.Moreover he proposed that CHOGM appoint an Eminent Persons Commission on Cyprus comprised of former Commonwealth Prime Ministers and Heads of State, as a means to help resolve the Cyprus issue. Mr. Rann had meetings earlier this year with State Department's Special Coordinator for Cyprus Thomas Miller and Britain's Special Envoy Sir David Hannay. The Australian MP had visited Nicosia on 13 January. During his visit Mr. Rann informed Cypriot officials of his contacts in London and Washington and of his current Commonwealth initiative.
