[01] No USA plans to deploy Nato troops to Cyprus
"The United States has no plans to deploy US troops to Cyprus," the Press
Spokesman of the Pentagon Captain Mike Doubleday stated yesterday.
Replying to a journalist's question as to whether the US would deploy
troops under Nato initiative, the spokesman stressed that they "have no
plans to deploy US troops under any circumstances".
Asked whether the Cyprus Foreign Minister is going to have meetings at the
Pentagon regarding the demilitarisation of Cyprus, during his special visit
to Washington next week, the spokesman replied:
"I am aware of a visit, but he is not going to be here at the Pentagon as
far as I know".
[02] Consumer price index for January 1999 decreased compared to previous
month
The Consumer price index for January 1999 decreased by 0.81 units or 0.65
per cent to 123.03 units compared to 123.84 units in the previous month.
According to the Department of Statistics and Research, this is mainly due
to decreases in the prices of certain clothing and footwear items due to
sale discounts as well as to decreases in the prices of certain fresh fruit
and vegetables.
The average rate of increase of the Index for the last twelve months (i.e.
February 1998 to January 1999) compared to the preceding twelve months
(i.e. February 1997-January 1998) was 2.24 per cent.
The Index of January 1999 compared to the Index of January 1998 showed an
increase of 2.18 per cent.
