[01] Foreign Minister holds contacts in Washington
Cyprus Foreign Minister held yesterday a number of contacts in the American
capital.
Mr. Kassoulides attended a working lunch, hosted by Cyprus Ambassador to
Washington D.C., Ms Erato Kozakou-Markoulli. The lunch was also attended by
senior US government officials.
Earlier in the day, the Foreign Minister briefed representatives of the
media on his US contacts, recent developments in the Cyprus problem, the
country's EU accession course and the prospect of the demilitarisation of
the island
[02] Britain whole-heartedly backs UN effort on Cyprus
The British Prime Minister Tony Blair reiterated his country's complete and
whole-hearted support to UN efforts on Cyprus.
In a letter of reply, dated 11.2.99, to the Conservative MP Sir Sydney
Chapman, Mr. Blair stressed that Britain "wants to see a major, sustained
effort towards securing a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus". Mr. Blair
also noted in his letter that "we shall be giving firm support to the
efforts of the UN Secretary-General to work intensively with the two sides
for compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1218".
"We will also be active in encouraging both sides to co-operate in a
constructive and flexible manner. In this way I hope we can secure real
progress towards a just and lasting settlement in Cyprus", he concluded.
[03] UN Secretary General's report on the financing of UNFICYP released.
A report by the UN Secretary General on the financing of UNFICYP was
released yesterday. The report, covering the period from 1 July 1997 to 30
June 1998, states that the amount spent for the maintenance of the peace-
keeping force reached $47,822.300 gross, resulting in an unencumbered
balance of $178,500 gross. The report calls the General Assembly to take
action in connection with the unencumbered balance of $178,500 gross.
