[01] Armenian Foreign Minister meets President Clerides
The Armenian Foreign Minister, Mr Vartan Oskanian, who is paying an
official visit to Cyprus, had a meeting with President Glafcos Clerides
yesterday.
In a statement to the press after the meeting Mr Oskanian said that it was
a great honour to be received by the President with whom they examined ways
"for a much more efficient and productive relationship between Armenia and
Cyprus".
The Armenian Minister pointed out that there are many issues on which the
two countries have common concerns and interests and for this reason they
agreed to try and co-ordinate their efforts even more, in international
fora and give support to one another.
Mr Oskanian said that the possibility of President Clerides' visiting
Armenia in the near future was also discussed and expressed the hope that
the President will be able to pay an official visit to Armenia during
1999.
[02] Britain reaffirms commitment to finding a solution to the Cyprus
problem
The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Baroness Symons reaffirmed her country's firm commitment to finding "a
solution to the Cyprus problem" based on UN Security Council resolutions
for a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
Replying to relevant questions on Cyprus, during a debate in the House of
Lords on 8 March Baroness Symons reiterated that UN Security Council
resolution 1218 of 22 December 1998, is an important step forward and sets
out clear objectives for reducing tension and for progress towards a
comprehensive settlement.
Asked to confirm Britain's support to Cyprus' application for membership in
the European Union, Baroness Symons stressed that the United Kingdom is
looking forward to the eventual accession of Cyprus. Regarding the
participation of the Turkish Cypriots she pointed out that "President
Clerides has invited Mr Denktash to have some discussions about the way
forward with regard to the Cypriot application for EU membership."
