[01] Foreign Minister urges Turkish Cypriots not to miss EU chance
Foreign Minster Ioannis Kassoulides urged Turkish Cypriots to put aside
past differences and work together with the government of Cyprus towards
accession to the European Union.
Speaking at Larnaca airport last Saturday, at the conclusion of a 15-day
working visit to Germany, Austria and Belgium, Mr. Kassoulides stressed the
need for all Cypriots to actively participate in Cyprus' accession
process.
Moreover Mr Kassoulides said that Cyprus accession to the EU óeither before
or after a solution to the Cyprus problem, will lead our Turkish Cypriots
compatriots to realise that it is irrational to accept the division of the
island.ò
The Foreign Minister called on the Turkish Cypriot community ónot to miss
the opportunity of Cyprus becoming a member of the large European familyò
and urged them to work with the Cyprus government towards EU accession.
[02] Cyprus denounces illegal implantation of settlers
The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Mr Sotos Zackheos
addressed on March 12, a letter to the UN Secretary General denouncing the
illegal immigration of settlers to Cyprus.
In his letter, Mr Zackheos points out that according to international
treaties and conventions compulsory population transfers constitute not
only internationally wrongful acts but also international crimes.
Mr. Zackheos also notes that the Security Council in its resolution 361
(1974) expressed its grave concern at the plight of the refugees and called
for permitting those who wished to do so to return to their homes in
safety.
