[01] Cyprus delegation to participate in EU Parliamentary Committees meeting

A delegation of the Foreign and European Affairs Committee of the Cyprus House of Representatives, headed its President Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, has departed for Berlin on Sunday to participate in the 20th Meeting of the Parliamentary European Affairs Committees of the European Parliament, the European Union member-states and the EU applicant countries.

The meeting will deal with various issues, such as EU common foreign and security policy, European Union enlargement, trade relations between the EU and the US and Latin America and matters relating to "Agenda 2000".

[02] Foreign experts begin exhumation of the remains of war dead

A team of experts of the international non-governmental organisation "Physicians for Human Rights", arrived in Cyprus on Friday to exhume and examine remains belonging to Greek Cypriot and Greek war dead of the 1974 Turkish invasion, for identification purposes.

The exhumations which will begin this week are taking place solely for humanitarian purposes. Their main objective is to restore and respect the rights of relatives of war dead to be informed of their identity in a convincing manner.

The team, which includes anthropologists archaeologists and pathologists, led by Professor William Haglund, has extensive experience in exhuming and identifying remains from its work world-wide and more recently in Rwanda, Bosnia, Somalia and Croatia.

Exhumations will be carried out at two cemeteries, Ayios Constantinos and Eleni Cemetery in Nicosia and the Military Cemetery in Lakatamia. Scientific examinations of the remains will then be carried out at a laboratory in Nicosia, established for this purpose. Samples will then be analysed at the Institute of Genetics and Neurology in order to scientifically establish their identity. When the identity is established, the remains will be handed to the relatives for proper burial.
