[01] New momentum on Cyprus from G-8 expected, says Britain

Britain and the other countries meeting at the G-8 summit this weekend will seek to put a new momentum into the UN process on the Cyprus talks, Britain's Foreign Secretary, Mr Robin Cook has said.

"What we want to see is for those talks to actually get going and to get under way without preconditions on either side, for both sides to come together and to start to tackle these issues", he said, speaking after a meeting in London yesterday with the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

Asked moreover whether, in view of all the effort to get the Kosovo refugees back, he sees any effort to get the Cypriot refugees back, Mr Cook said that any final settlement must find a solution to those who have been displaced from their homes.

To a question whether any agreement had been reached on EU-Turkey relations, Mr Cook said progress had been made, as the European strategy for Turkey provides a way forward.

In this respect he added that they would welcome Turkey as a partner in finding a genuine solution to the division of Cyprus and make sure they can restore it as one whole, single state.

[02] New strategy for Cyprus industry

Cyprus' Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister, Nicos Rolandis, yesterday unveiled the government's new 12-chapter industrial policy, aimed at revitalising the sector.

Speaking at a press conference, he said that the new policy aims at tackling depression in the industrial field, whose share in the GDP fell from 18% in 1982 to 11,5% in 1997.

The strategy include measures to develop high-technology industries, restructuring and supporting traditional light industries, and attracting foreign investments through the creation of a one-stop shop.
