Cyprus PIO: News Update in English, 99-10-26Cyprus Press and Information Office: News Updates in English Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>Tuesday, 26 October 1999[01] P>The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides had a meeting yesterday with the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Dr Luciano Violante, who is heading a delegation on an official visit to the island, at the invitation of the President of the House of Representatives. Italian Deputies, Antonio Ruberti and Piero Melograni, also participated at the meeting. In a statement to the press after the meeting, Dr Violante said he and President Clerides had a long discussion during which they analysed the Cyprus problem. "We have realised the need to place the Cyprus problem in a wider international perspective, so that it becomes a Mediterranean and a European issue, and not a bilateral Greeco-Turkish issue as many in other parts of Europe believe", he said. The Italian House President said that the meeting of National Parliaments' Committees for Community Issues, which will take place in Portugal in May 2000 and in which the Representative of Cyprus will participate, "will provide a good opportunity to deal with the Cyprus problem". The effort of the Italian Assembly, he said, is moving in this direction. In conclusion, Dr Violante expressed the hope that the conditions, that will allow Cyprus's accession to the European Union, will soon be created. [02] P>Cyprus' strategic and economic importance "as an economic link and bridge between Europe, to which it belongs, and the Middle East, Asia and Africa", was emphasised by the President of the Committee on Economic Affairs and Development of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CoE) Mrs Helle Degn yesterday.Addressing a Council of Europe Economic Affairs and Development Committee meeting in Limassol, Mrs Degn said that today Cyprus experiences rapid economic development. "Cyprus has started an accession process to the European Union, a process which I am sure we all support", she added. In his address, Cyprus Minister of Finance Mr Takis Klerides said that Cyprus has a free market economy since its establishment in 1960, but pointed out that today it has to face the challenges of rapid technological changes and the globalisation of economies. Mr Klerides briefed the Cypriot and foreign Members of Parliament and other officials attending the meeting on the island's economy and the government's strategic plan for the period 1999-2203.
