[02] New UNFICYP Major - General assumes duties
Cyprus Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kassoulides said yesterday that the
process of the proximity talks that have got underway is the most
appropriate and the only way to settle the Cyprus problem.
Speaking to the press yesterday at the end of a session of the Council of
Ministers, Mr Kassoulides stressed that the Helsinki decision has made it
clear that Cyprus/ division is not an obstacle to its accession.
Moreover Mr Eassoulides pointed out that the recent EU summit has created a
new political climate which the Turkish side cannot ignore, adding that the
only path Turkey can take to proceed towards Europe is the path determined
by the EU.
He also repeated the Cyprus Government's invitation to the Turkish Cypriots
to participate in the Republic's negotiating team for Cyprus' accession to
the EU.
Major -General Victory Rana of Nepal assumed yesterday command of the
United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), succeeding Major -
General Evergisto Arturo de Vergara of Argentina Major - General Rana
enlisted as a cadet in the Nepalese army in 1996.
Born in 1945, he is graduate of the us Army War college and the German
Command and General Staff College as well as the Indian Army Senior Command
Course.
