[01] Foreign Minister receives Cyprus flag that travelled to the moon

At a ceremony in the Foreign Ministry yesterday, retired Turkish Cypriot diplomat Mr Ozdemir Ozgur handed to Foreign Minister Mr Yiannakis Kassoulides the Cyprus Republic flag that was taken to the moon, together with other national flags, aboard the Apollo 14 spacecraft in February 1971.

Recounting how he came by the flag, Mr Ozgur said that he happened to be present at the First Committee of the UN General Assembly when astronaut Alan Shepard, who was also a member of the Committee came in with the flag and gave it to him.

The late Cyprus UN Permanent Representative Zenon Rossides told him to keep it and ever since Mr Ozgur felt that the flag should be placed somewhere where it could be seen.

Receiving the flag, Mr Kassoulides said that «this flag represented Cyprus, and the fact that it was in the safe keeping of a Turkish Cypriot compatriot and colleague, shows that this country cannot remain divided». The Cypriot flag, which stands as a symbol of our statehood, he added, bears a particularly symbolic significance since it represented the Republic of Cyprus as far away as the moon.

Mr Kassoulides expressed the hope that the flag will once again represent the reunification of the island.

During the ceremony Mr. Ozgur presented his book entitled «Cyprus in My Life: Testimony of a Turkish Cypriot Diplomat».

[02] Cyprus and Iran to strengthen trade cooperation

Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Mr Nicos Rolandis held yesterday a meeting with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mr Mohsen Aminzadeh with whom he exchanged views on ways of developing bilateral cooperation.

The two Ministers discussed ways to increase commercial transactions, cooperation in the field of tourism and joint ventures between businessmen in both Cyprus and Iran as well as in third countries.
