[01] President Clerides: «It is our fervent desire to see a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem achieved as soon as possible»

In a message on the occasion of the anniversaries of the coup and Turkish invasion of Cyprus, President Clerides stressed that the Greek Cypriot side is «ready to negotiate seriously, with courage and flexibility, depending on the stand of the representatives of the Turkish Cypriot community. It is our fervent desire to see a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem achieved the soonest possible», he added.

President Clerides expressed hope that the international community, particularly the countries which are in a position to exert their influence on the Turkish side will succeed this time in persuading Ankara to acquire the political will required to solve the Cyprus problem.

President Clerides noted that both Greek and Turkish Cypriots «must find a good solution which will heal the wounds of the past, overcome the suspicion and sense of insecurity felt by both communities, dispel their fears and concerns and consolidate a climate of confidence, mutual understanding and cooperation».

The Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, he added, «must realise that we must work hard to build a common and bright future for the benefit of all the inhabitants of Cyprus and not insist on adhering to anachronistic attitudes and methods».

«We must create, all together, new prospects for peace, stability and security on the basis of the UN resolutions and international law and legality so as to be able to enjoy the benefits of harmonious coexistence and cooperation within the European Union. In this way we shall also contribute to the implementation of the international community's aim to achieve security, stability and cooperation among all the countries in the region», he added.

President Clerides reaffirmed that until a solution is found, the Government of the Republic of Cyprus will continue its policy of strengthening the defence of the free areas within the framework of the Cyprus-Greece Unified Defence Space Dogma.

In his message President Clerides thanked the Greek Government, the political parties and people for their help in our struggle, particularly in our diplomatic efforts to join the European Union and as regards the defence sector.

He also thanked all the overseas Greeks and other foreign governments and personalities for their solidarity and active support.

[02] Events held worldwide to mark the 26th anniversary of Turkish invasion

Cypriots living abroad organised a number of events to mark today's 26th anniversary of Turkish invasion.

In London, an anti-occupation rally took place in Trafalgar Square on July 16, demanding the withdrawal of the Turkish troops, occupying 37 per cent of Cyprus territory, in violation of repeated United Nations Resolutions. They called for the restoration of human rights in Cyprus grossly violated by the Turkish troops and urged the British government to help resolve the Cyprus problem.

The massive gathering organised by the Cyprus Federation of Great Britain was addressed by Cyprus Education and Culture Minister, Ouranios Ioannides, Cypriot community leaders in Britain and British MP's and Euro MP's.

Moreover memorial services were held in Athens, Madrid, Toronto and Washington.
