[01] Cyprus Parliamentarians address Inter-Parliamentary Union

Progress towards a settlement of the Cyprus problem can only be achieved if Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot Leader Mr Rauf Denktash abandon their intransigent policy, the Group of Facilitators for Cyprus in the Inter- Parliamentary Union have stated.

Addressing the 104th Inter-Parliamentary Conference in Jakarta on 17 October, the members of the Group described the situation in Cyprus as unacceptable due to the continuous Turkish military occupation and the blatant human rights violations.

The Cyprus parliamentarians stressed the need for the respect of the right of refugees to return to their homes and properties and for the withdrawal of Turkish occupation troops from the island. They also condemned the massive colonization of the areas occupied by Turkish troops.

They pointed out that the presence of colonists in the occupied areas has been exploited by Ankara to promote its expansionist plans but at the same time it has forced many Turkish Cypriots to emigrate.

They stated that a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem should be based on the relevant UN resolutions on Cyprus and the High Level agreements, and should safeguard the human rights of all Cypriot citizens. In view of Cyprus' accession to the European Union it should also comply with the acquis communautaire.

The members of the group underlined that the UN resolutions on Cyprus provide for the establishment of a federated state with a single sovereignty, nationality, and international personality.
