 President Clerides leaves today
Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides leaves today for Switzerland to attend a
fifth round of UN-led talks for a settlement on the island scheduled to
begin in Geneva tomorrow.
At a meeting with the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser for Cyprus,
Alvaro de Soto, on Friday 27 October, President Clerides stressed that "the
basis and the framework for a solution exists, namely the UN Security
 Double taxation avoidance agreement signed
A new agreement for the avoidance of double taxation between Cyprus and
Bulgaria was signed yesterday between the Finance Ministers of the two
Speaking after the signing ceremony, Cyprus' Finance Minister, Takis
Klerides, said that this new agreement was drawn up because four months ago
the Bulgarian Parliament abolished the previous double taxation agreement.
He added that as far as Cyprus is concerned it comes into effect immediately,
and is expected to be approved soon by the Bulgarian parliament so that it
can start being applied in the country in January 2001.
 Cyprus' ambassador presents credentials to Costa Rica
Cyprus' Ambassador to Mexico, Mr. Antonis Toumazis, on 26 October presented
his credentials to the President of Costa Rica, Mr. Miguel Angel Rodriguez
At a meeting afterwards President Rodriguez reaffirmed his country's firm
stand on a solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN resolutions. He also
stressed that Costa Rica is interested in developing relations with Cyprus
in all fields and expressed particular interest in the progress of Cyprus'
negotiations for entry into the European Union.
