[01] Security Council renews UNFICYP mandate
The United Nations Security Council met yesterday under the chair of the
body's current President, Ambassador Sergey Lavrov of the Russian
Federation and unanimously adopted resolution 1331 (2000), which extends
the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)
for a further period of six months ending on 15 June 2001.
According to the resolution the Security Council "reaffirms all its
relevant resolutions on Cyprus, and in particular resolution 1251 (1999) of
29 June 1999", which contains all the parameters for the solution of the
Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation with a single
sovereignty and national identity.
"It urges the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkish forces to rescind the
restrictions imposed on 30 June 2000 on the operations of UNCIFYP and to
restore the military status quo ante at Strovilia."
It also "requests the Secretary-General to submit a report by 1 June 2001
on the implementation of this resolution".
Finally "it decides to remain actively seized of the matter".
