[01] World Conference of Overseas Cypriot Youth approves resolution on the Cyprus problem

The first World Conference of Overseas Cypriot Youth concluded its work in Nicosia on 6 January 2001, with the participation of sixty delegates from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Greece, France, South Africa and Egypt.

In a resolution adopted at the end of the conference, the delegates underlined their strong support for a bizonal, bicommunal solution of the Cyprus problem within the framework of the United Nations resolutions on Cyprus.

Noting that the status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable and a threat to peace and stability in the region, the delegates stressed that a Cyprus settlement must exclude union in whole or in part with any other country or any form of partition or secession.

The delegates supported the need for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem, which safeguards the survival of the Cypriot people and the reunification of the island under conditions of security and freedom for all. This solution must be based on one State of Cyprus, with a single sovereignty and international personality and a single citizenship and must safeguard the restoration of human rights and basic freedoms of all its citizens.

Condemning Turkey's effort to change the demographic character of the island, its colonization of the occupied areas of Cyprus and the plundering of the island's cultural heritage, the delegates called for the demilitarization of Cyprus as a first step towards the overall solution of the Cyprus problem. They also called for respect of the right of all the refugees to return to their homes, and for the ascertainment of the fate of all missing persons.

Finally, they urged the international community and especially the United States, Britain and the European Union to exert pressure on Turkey to abandon its intransigent policy on the Cyprus problem.
