[01] President Clerides comments on Turkish Foreign Minister's statements

President Glafcos Clerides has said that if the recent statements made by Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem constitute threats, we are not afraid.

"If they aim to change the European Union's stand vis a vis Cyprus then the only thing they will achieve is to change the EU's stand vis a vis Turkey", he said.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem had said that Cyprus' accession to the European Union would be a "pyrrhic victory" and constitutes Ankara's "trump card" in its effort to obstruct Cyprus' accession, which would bring new suffering to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities.

President Clerides added that if Turkey genuinely wants peace in Cyprus then why does the Turkish side not return to the UN-led proximity talks which aim at reaching an overall settlement on the island.

The President was replying to press questions in Cairo yesterday at the end of a private visit to Egypt and after meeting with the country's Prime Minister Mr Atef Ebeid and Foreign Minister Mr Amr Moussa. During the meetings the further development of cooperation between the two countries and Cyprus' role as a bridge connecting Europe to this region were discussed.

Asked about Cyprus' position on the Palestinian question, President Clerides expressed support for an immediate solution through negotiations and without preconditions adding that Cyprus recognises the right of the Palestinians to set up their own independent state.

[02] Cyprus Finance Minister attends EU meeting

Finance Minister Takis Klerides has gone to Sweden to attend a joint meeting of European Union Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors with their counterparts from the 13 candidate countries held in Malmo on 21-22 April.

This is the first time Cyprus has been called to attend a meeting of the Finance Ministers of the 15 EU-member states.

From Sweden Mr Klerides flew to London to attend the 10th General Assembly of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

[03] Turkey must make adjustments, says Greek Defence Minister

Turkey is obliged to make certain adjustments in its course towards the European Union and in its attempt to forge new relations with Europe, Greece's National Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos has said.

In particular it must abandon the threat of the use of force and the false belief that sheer negativity will bring about progress, he added.

Mr Tsohatzopoulos was speaking after a meeting with his French counterpart Mr A. Richard in Paris.
