[01] The United States of America support the efforts of the UN for a
solution to the Cyprus problem
The US continues to back UN efforts to achieve a comprehensive settlement
on Cyprus, US State Department Spokesman, Mr Philip Ricker, stated on 15
August 2001 noting that on 28 August 2001 the UN Secretary General, Mr Kofi
Annan, will be meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash in
Salzburg.
Asked if there were any new developments in the UN-led Cyprus peace talks,
Mr Ricker stated that: "We continue to support UN efforts to achieve a
comprehensive settlement on Cyprus. As the UN announced on 2 August, the
Secretary-General will be meeting Mr Denktash .Shortly after that meeting,
Mr Alvaro de Soto, the Secretary-General/s special adviser, plans to go to
Cyprus for consultations with both sides. Other questions regarding the
Cyprus talks should be directed to the UN".
[02] Cyprus' rangs first in terms of its GDP
Cyprus is ahead of the rest of the candidate states for accession to the EU
in terms of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to the statistical data published on 13 August 2001 from the
European Union/s Statistical Service (EUROSTAT), Cyprus has the highest GDP
rate among the EU accession candidate states. More specifically, Cyprus/
GDP represents the 82 per cent of the Union/s average rate. Slovenia and
the Czech Republic follow with 71 and 58 per cent respectively.
As far as economic growth is concerned, Cyprus has achieved a 4,8 per cent
rate of development and rangs 6th belowTurkey, Latvia, Estonia, Bulgaria
and Hungary.
