[01] Cyprus condemns terrorist attacks in the United States

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Glafcos Clerides signed, on 17 September 2001, the book of condolences for the victims of the terrorist attacks in the USA at the American Embassy in Nicosia.

After the signature of the book, the President of the Republic of Cyprus made the following statement: "The government of the Republic of Cyprus and its people condemn unreservedly the barbaric terrorist attacks in the USA which resulted in the death of thousands of American citizens and in others missing. Cyprus expresses its deep sympathy to the victims and to the relatives of the missing persons and pledges to cooperate with the government of the USA and with all other governments engaged in the battle against terrorism".

[02] Cypriot Foreign Minister returns from New York

Cypriot Foreign Minister, Mr Ioannis Kasoulides returned from New York on 17 September 2001, following the cancelling of the meeting of the President of the Republic of Cyprus with UN Secretary General due to the recent terrorist attacks which hit New York.

Speaking during his arrival at Larnaca Airport, Mr Kasoulides made, inter alia, the following statement: "The way international terrorism has evolvedaims at overturning today/s western way of life, civilization where we belong as well. It has to do with an obscurantist islamic fanaticism and it is for this reason that we must not allow its domination".

[03] Cypriot Interior Minister and Chinese Minister of Civil Affairs sigh an interstate agreement

Cypriot Interior Minister, Mr Christodoulos Christodoulou and the Minister of Civil Affairs of the Peoples/ Republic of China, Mr Duoji Cairang, on 17 September 2001 , discussed issues of common interest. The Chinese Minister is on an official visit to the island following the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart.

Following the conclusion of the meeting the two Ministers signed an interstate agreement in Civil Defence and Local Authorities Elections, aiming at promoting the friendly relations between the two countries and at developing their cooperation.

Later on in the day, the Chinese Minister met with the Cypriot Minister of Labour and Social Insurance and expressed his interest in the way of the Social Insurance system functions in Cyprus.

[04] China will not change its stance on the Cyprus problem

The President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias had a meeting yesterday with the Chinese Minister of Civil Affairs Mr Duoji Cairang, who is currently visiting Cyprus.

Replying to questions after the meeting, the Chinese Minister stressed that China will not change its stance on the Cyprus problem. He also noted the good relations that exist between China and Cyprus.

In his statement Mr Christofias, said that with Mr Cairang they exchanged views on human rights and citizens' rights and on the future of international relations. They also reviewed the international situation as it is developing after the terrorist attacks in New York.

Mr Christofias thanked Mr Cairang for the consistent stance of the Peoples' Republic of China on international issues and in particular on the Cyprus problem.

[05] President of the House of Representatives meets with South African Minister to the President

The President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias received yesterday the South African Minister to the President Mr Essop Pahad, who arrived in Cyprus for an official visit.

During the meeting, Mr Christofias briefed the South African official on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and exchanged views on bilateral relations and the international situation. They also examined ways of enhancing cooperation between Cyprus and South Africa.

[06] Cyprus Permanent Representative to UN expresses outrage at terrorist attacks against the US

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the United Nations Ambassador Sotos Zackheos, in his capacity as Chairman of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country, has sent the following written statement to the press, with which he condemns the terrorist attacks against the United States of America.

"On behalf of the United Nations diplomatic community, and in the name of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country, I would like to echo the sense of outrage felt in the hearts and minds of all humanity at the tragic and senseless loss of human life and property which have resulted from the heinous acts of terrorism inflicted upon our host city and country. We express our solidarity with the people and Government of the United States of America and join them in mourning the loss of the countless victims of these atrocities, sharing the grief of their families and loved ones, and expressing the hope that all those responsible for the massive death and destruction will be brought to justice as soon as possible.

We are grateful for the valiant and noble efforts of the men and women of the city and state of New York and the Federal Government who are working timelessly to rescue the missing, recover the lost, salvage the ruins and restore the peace and security of our host city and country".
