[01] Statement by the Foreign Minister

Cyprus Foreign Minister Mr Ioannis Kasoulides said today that Cyprus was closely following developments concerning the military operation against terrorism and assured that all the necessary measures had been taken in Cyprus.

Speaking to the press prior to his departure for Brussels, where he is due to attend the 20th meeting of the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee, Mr Kasoulides also expressed the hope that Foreign Envoys assigned to follow the Cyprus problem would continue to do so and that efforts aimed at reaching a solution to the problem would resume in the near future.

The need for Cyprus to contribute to efforts to combat terrorism is understandable, he said, adding that Cyprus' role in combating theterrorists' financial resources and its geographical position are important.

Replying to a question as to whether during his meeting in Brussels with EU High Representative on Common Foreign and Security Policy Mr Xavier Solana, he would discuss Cyprus' contribution to the struggle against terrorism, the Foreign Minister said he believed that the main issue for discussion would be the struggle against terrorism, EU relevant decisions, the obligations and responsibilities of candidate and associated countries, as well as the measures taken by Cyprus and its contribution to EU efforts to secure the solidarity of all countries of the region to the struggle against terrorism.

Asked if there was any danger for Cyprus, Mr Kasoulides said that the situation in Cyprus was under control, that all measures had been taken and there was no need concern. Flights are conducted normally, and the tourist traffic remained at the same levels, he said.

[02] Cyprus government to actively co-operate in the world-wide fight against terrorism

The Minister of Finance, Mr Takis Klerides, had a meeting with the USA Ambassador, Mr D. Bandler, on 3 October 2001 to discuss issues arising in relation to the terrorist attacks on the 11th September in the USA.

The Minister reiterated the firm commitment of the Cyprus government to actively co-operate in the world-wide fight against terrorism. In particular, the Minister informed the Ambassador of the USA that the competent authorities of Cyprus adopted the UN Security Council Resolution 1373 to freeze all bank accounts and assets in connection to terrorist organisations. The Central Bank has issued appropriate instructions to the commercial banks. The Minister of Finance and the Ambassador of the USA also exchanged views on various related issues, including ways to further improve customs controls in Cyprus.

The Minister of Finance and the Ambassador of the USA agreed to maintain close contacts, with a view to co-ordinating the actions of their governments against terrorism.
