[01] President Clerides meets with UN Secretary General's Special Adviser
on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto
The President of the Republic Mr Glafcos Clerides received yesterday, at
the Presidential Palace, the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on
Cyprus Mr Alvaro de Soto. The Attorney General of the Republic Mr Alecos
Markides, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Ioannis Kasoulides, the
Government Spokesman Mr Michalis Papapetrou and the Under Secretary to the
President Mr Pantelis Kouros, were present a the meeting.
Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou said after the meeting that the
President and Mr de Soto discussed preparatory matters regarding Wednesday's
start of direct talks between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides.
Replying to questions, Mr Papapetrou said that he did not know the time for
Wednesday's meeting because Mr De Soto would probably have meetings with
the two sides again on Tuesday.
[02] US President signs Foreign Operations Bill
The United States President Mr George Bush signed into law H.R. 2506, on 10
January 2002, the "Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related
Programs Appropriations Act 2002," which includes a provision for $15
million financial aid to Cyprus.
In his statement, President Bush said that the Act provides the funds
needed to support U.S. foreign policy objectives abroad and reflects the
restraint on spending that has been a key goal of his Administration.
[03] Demographic Report 2000
The Statistical Service has announced that it has published the Demographic
Report for the year 2000. The report gives, inter alia, an account of
population developments and provides data on a time series basis on
fertility, mortality, marriages and divorces.
The Demographic Report is available from the Government Printing Office in
Nicosia.
