[01] Statement by the President of the Republic

The President of the Republic, Mr Glafcos Clerides, asked today by journalists if the Government was concerned about the activities of the Turkish research vessel "Sismik 1" in the territorial waters of Cyprus, said: "We are following the movements of this ship and making the proper demarches."

Asked also to comment on the statements of the US State Department Spokesman that the USA was promoting a solution to the Cyprus problem before Cyprus' accession to the European Union and whether he was aware of this position when he stated that there was a likelihood for the Constitution to be changed or for the Presidential Elections to be postponed, the President of the Republic said: "I am not aware of the statements of the US State Department Spokesman. As is already known, the UN Secretary General has said that June is a target date and that progress must be made by the end of June". The President also said that the direct talks could continue until next December.

[02] Talks between Cyprus and China on legal issues

The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr Nicos Koshis, had yesterday talks with the Vice Minister of Justice of the People's Republic of China, Mrs Lin Yang, currently in Cyprus for a six-day official visit. The talks focused on issues relating to the role, organisation and functions of their respective ministries, as well as on issues concerning the administration of justice and the enhancement of the cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, Mr Koshis and Mrs Yang signed a memorandum of official talks and decided to promote their countries' cooperation, which will result to the conclusion of an agreement to transfer convicts and extradite fugitives.

[03] Cyprus and China sign cooperation agreement on education and culture

The Minister of Education and Cultrure, Mr Ouranios Ioannnides, and the Chinese Vice Minister of Culture, Mr Zhou Heping, signed yesterday a cooperation agreement on the sectors of education, culture, mass media, sports and youth for the years 2002-2004.

Speaking to the press after the signing of the agreement, Mr Ioannides said that Cyprus would greatly benefit from this agreement and assured Mr Heping that Cyprus would do everything possible to put into effect this agreement. Moreover, he expressed his gratitude for China's continuing support to the Republic of Cyprus in international fora, especially as far as Cyprus problem is concerned.

On his part, Mr Heping expressed his conviction that this agreement will contribute to the promotion of the bilateral relations and more specifically the cultural links between the two countries.
