[01] 11th OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Annual Session

The 11th OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Annual Session is currently taking place on the premises of the German Bundestag, in Berlin.

The opening plenary on Saturday, 6 July was addressed by the OSCE Chairman- in-Office, Portuguese Foreign Minister, Mr Antonio Martins da Cruz.

The President of the Bundestag Mr Wolfgang Thierse and the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Mr Gerhard Schroder also addressed welcoming remarks.

The House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus was represented by MPs Mr Giorgos Lillikas, Mr Aristos Chrysostomou and Ms Eleni Theocharous.

The central theme of the 11th Annual Session was: "Confronting Terrorism: a Global Challenge in the 21st Century".

Speaking at the 2nd General Committee on Economic Affairs, Science, Technology and Environment, Mr Chrysostomou, inter alia, referred to the fact that the Cyprus Government has already ratified all the international Treaties and Protocols related to the fight against terrorism, and has placed the acts against terrorism among the highest priorities of its foreign policy, through international cooperation.

Speaking at the 3rd General Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions, Ms Theocharous strongly condemned terrorism exercised by Turkey, both against Kurdish population and against Cyprus for the passed 28 years. Ms Theocharous wondered how it was possible that out of 120.000 Turkish-Cypriots in 1974, now, with the supposed protection of the Turkish army, only 40 to 50 thousand have remained, pointing out that the Muslim community of Cyprus suffers too, from the Turkish invasion and occupation. Ms Theocharous also referred to the destruction and disappearance of thousands of Kurdish villages by the Turkish army in Eastern Turkey.
