[01] UK Defence Ministry: new Akrotiri antenna will increase emissions

The British Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Mr. Adam Ingram, replying to questions posed by Labour MP Mr. Andrew Dismore, before the House of Commons on 30 October, regarding the new antenna to be installed at the British military base in Akrotiri, Cyprus, stated that the installation of the antenna was not expected to result in a significant increase in the level of emissions.

Mr. Ingram noted that the possible impact of the new antenna on the health of the people living in the Akrotiri area had been carefully considered by the UK Government and it had been assessed that levels of electromagnetic emissions from the new system would be "no greater than those of the system it will replace and will be well within EU safety limits".

Subsequent test carried out by the Cyprus Government last summer, he stressed, had confirmed those assessments. "The Ministry of Communications and Works of the (Cyprus) Republic announced that exposure of the public to electromagnetic radiation from the existing antenna on the Salt Lake is at least seventy six times smaller than the limit recommended by the European Union and that the installation of the new antenna is not expected to result in a significant increase in the level of emissions in the area", Mr. Ingram said.

He also pointed out that extensive consultations had taken place between the governments of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Cyprus on the decision to build the new antenna, which led to a joint statement in August 2001 about the steps necessary to address concerns on the possible impact of the antenna on the health of Akrotiri residents and on the environment.

"The British Government has fulfilled the key undertakings set out in the joint statement", the UK official said, expressing his Government's intention to set up permanent monitoring equipment in the Akrotiri village "to confirm that emissions remain at the very low levels demonstrated in last summer's tests".

[02] Syria committed to supply Cyprus with natural gas

Syria is ready and committed to supply Cyprus with approximately three million cubic metres of natural gas per day, the Syrian Minister of Petroleum and Natural Resources, Mr. Ibrahim Haddar, stated after a meeting with the Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Mr. Nicos Rolandis, in Nicosia, last Friday.

"The quantity of three million cubic metres per day would cover Cyprus' needs to the full", Mr. Rolandis said after the meeting, adding that the issue of transporting natural gas to Cyprus would be brought before the Council of Ministers within a few weeks for a decision on how to proceed with tenders.

"The Republic of Cyprus will proceed with the method of tenders because there are surely other solutions on the table, and it will secure the lowest price with either way of transportation", the Cyprus Minister told the press.

The two ministers also discussed the exploitation of oil reserves in the region as well as the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone between the two countries.
