[01] National Council accepts to negotiate UN planThe President of the Republic, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, presided over a meeting of the National Council this morning, during which the basis for agreement on a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem, submitted by the UN Secretary-General, was discussed.After the meeting, the Government Spokesman, Mr. Michalis Papapetrou, read to journalists the following press release of the National Council: "The majority of the members of the National Council suggested to the President of the Republic to reply to the UN Secretary-General that he accepts to carry out negotiations on his proposal, with the aim of achieving a solution to the Cyprus problem. The National Council reiterated the commitment of the Greek-Cypriot side to pursue without delay, a peaceful solution to the Cyprus problem through negotiations between the two communities, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. The National Council ascertains that objectively the proposed time frames are extremely stifling, and therefore, the dates should not be considered binding. The next meeting of the National Council will be on Thursday, 28 November at 9 a.m." [02] European Commission: Cyprus' and Turkey's accession courses are separateThe European Commission Spokesman, Mr. Jonathan Faull, stated during yesterday's press briefing in Brussels that the accession of one country to the European Union could not depend upon the accession of another country.Mr. Faull was commenting on claims made by the leader of Turkey's Justice and Development Party Mr. Tayyip Erdogan, during the latter's visit to the occupied areas of the island, who said that Cyprus should accede to the EU simultaneously with Turkey. The EC Spokesman pointed out that "each candidate country should be judged on its own merits, and it can start accession negotiations if it fulfills the criteria". [03] President Clerides will meet with UN arms inspector chiefThe President of the Republic, Mr. Glafcos Clerides, will receive tomorrow morning the Chief UN weapons inspector and Acting Director of the UN Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC), Dr. Hans Blix.UNMOVIC, set up in accordance with Security Council resolutions, is responsible for sending weapons inspectors to Iraq, in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency, based in Vienna. The Cyprus Government has signed an agreement with the UN, which allows UNMOVIC to create a local office in Larnaca, Cyprus, aiming to coordinate the weapons inspectors' transportation to Iraq. The agreement falls within the framework of Cyprus' active contribution to UN efforts for the implementation of Security Council Resolution 1441 (2002), which foresees that UN inspectors go to Iraq with a view at disarming the country of nuclear, biological and chemical weapons. [04] Cyprus and Sri Lanka initial air agreementCyprus and Sri Lanka have initialled an air transport agreement, which sets the framework for the development of air shipping relations between the two countries and the promotion of bilateral ties in the areas of tourism and economy.The agreement was initialled by the Permanent Secretary of the Communications and Works Ministry Mr. Symeon Matsis, on behalf of the Cyprus Government, and the General Secretary of the Sri Lankan Transport Ministry, Mr. Cecil Amerasinghe. The Cyprus Ministry of Communications and Works has announced that a Memorandum of Agreement was signed on 15 November, after the completion of negotiations between the competent authorities from the two countries. [05] Cyprus and Poland willing to conclude health agreementThe Cyprus Minister of Health, Mr. Frixos Savvides, was in Poland on a two- day official visit last week, where he met with his Polish counterpart, Mr. M. Lapinski.The two Ministers discussed issues regarding the harmonisation with the EU acquis on the chapter of health, the health systems of the two countries, as well as ways to promote bilateral cooperation in relevant areas. They also expressed willingness to contribute to the conclusion of a bilateral agreement on issues of public health and medical science. [06] EU enlargement will take place on 1 May 2004The Danish Foreign Minister, Mr. Per Stig Moller, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Presidency, informed the press yesterday during a press conference in Brussels that the next EU enlargement would take place on 1 May 2004.That was a decision taken during yesterday's meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, Mr. Moller said, expressing belief that this would be the definite date for the ten candidate countries to join the Union.
