[01] President Papadopoulos: G/C side's positions on solution remain unchanged

The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr Tassos Papadopoulos, stressed that the Greek Cypriot side's position that the Annan plan remained on the table as the basis for further negotiations had not changed since The Hague. Replying to press questions on the Cyprus problem, at the Presidential Palace yesterday, the President noted that the UN Secretary-General was fully aware of the Greek Cypriot side's positions as well as of the amendments on the Annan plan that it wished to bring about. "I believe that the Secretary-General understands that the amendments we want aim at rendering the document more functional and viable, and that they fall within the parameters of the Annan plan", Mr Papadopoulos further said. Replying to another question, he expressed his position that the recent measures of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Denktash, were "not even a step towards a negotiated settlement of the Cyprus problem". Asked to comment on recent statements regarding the Cyprus problem by the Turkish Premier, Mr Tayyip Erdogan, President Papadopoulos pointed out that Mr Erdogan had never adopted a different policy on Cyprus than the one followed by the Turkish military establishment.

[02] Russia continues to support resumption of UN peace talks

The Special Representative for Cyprus at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Mr Vladimir Prygin, has reiterated his country's support for the resumption of the UN-led peace talks for a Cyprus settlement on the basis of the Annan plan. Speaking yesterday after a meeting with the President of the House of Representatives Mr Demetris Christofias, Mr Prygin categorically dismissed Turkish Cypriot press reports according to which a Russian military attache in Turkey had suggested the Serbian model for a Cyprus settlement. The Russian diplomat noted that the reports were "distorting Russia's policy on Cyprus". On his part, the House President, Mr Christofias, expressed gratitude to Russia for its "firm position in the effort to achieve a balanced and fair UN resolution after the collapse of the talks in The Hague due to the stance of Mr Denktash".

[03] Government gives out list of T/C missing persons

In accordance with a decision taken by the Council of Ministers on April 30, a list of 500 Turkish Cypriot missing persons, whose cases have been submitted for investigation to the Committee on Missing Persons, was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Cyprus number 3713. The data and information pertaining to each case are those submitted to the Committee on Missing Persons by the Office of the Turkish Cypriot representative to the Committee. It should be noted that for 201 of these 500 cases details and information about the death and the burial place of these persons have been given in the framework of the implementation of the July 31, 1997 agreement on missing persons to the Turkish Cypriot representative. Anybody having information, or knowing details that could help in ascertaining the conditions of disappearance, or the fate in general of any of the missing persons in the said list, is requested to contact the appropriate government service, tel. 22305794 and 22305795.
