[01] Government Spokesman says that any dealings that take place between Turkey and the occupation regime are illegal

"The citizens of the Republic of Cyprus will continue to be its citizens even after accession to the EU, therefore, there is no reason for our Turkish Cypriot compatriots to worry over the issue of passports or other certificates" Government Spokesman, Mr Kypros Chrysostomides, said yesterday during his daily press briefing. Mr Chrysostomides was commenting on a press report in the newspaper Africa that the Cyprus Republic would not issue passports to the Turkish Cypriots after the 1st of May, the day that Cyprus would accede to the European Union. Invited to comment on press reports about the possible announcement of a customs union between Turkey and the pseudostate, the Government Spokesman, said: "Turkey is the only country that recognises the occupation regime. Any dealings that take place between Turkey and the occupation regime are part of a wider framework of illegality, of occupation on the one hand and the illegal declaration of a state on the other. There is no way to control these dealings. From the very first day of the invasion and occupation there has been a regime which is being ruled by the law of armed conflict. The same regime continues to exist today. Whatever dealings take place between Turkey and the occupation regime are part of the same framework of illegality." Asked if the Government would denounce those dealings, Mr Chrysostomides said that those dealings were proof of Turkey's support of the Denktash policy. "Cyprus' permanent protestation to all directions over the illegality of occupation and our demand to end the occupation will continue until the Cyprus problem is solved and the illegality of the occupation ceases," he said.
