Statement by the President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Glafcos Clerides, Friday, 13/9/1996
From: The Republic of Cyprus Press and Information Office Server at <http://www.pio.gov.cy/>
I have been carefully considering the situation created after the tragic
events which took place over
last month. It is my considered view that, despite the fact that the crimes committed have been
condemned, nevertheless considerable anxiety exists in Cyprus due to the tension they have
created.
I felt therefore the necessity to make it absolutely clear that we have not and will not waver from
our intention to continue even with more energy the effort to find a solution of the Cyprus problem
by peaceful means, through negotiations under the auspices of the Secretary- General of the
United Nations, based on the high-level agreements and the relevant U.N. resolutions for a bizonal
bicommunal federation.
The tragic events should not in any way be interpreted as showing an incompatibility of both
communities to live together in peace and prosperity in Cyprus, our common home.
We will take the necessary measures to prevent any escalation of the present tension. I call
therefore upon the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots to make every effort to defuse the
tension in the interest of peace.
