    [05] STOCK X

The Cyprus Stock Exchange opened only for 13 minutes today. After a board decision only two thousand transactions will be carried out on a daily basis, in an effort to make conclusion of these transactions possible. Because the brokerage offices were well prepared and conducted their transactions through the computers, the number of two thousand transactions was completed in 13 minutes.

This policy will be continued until all the delayed transaction are cleared. This decision, however caused severe protests from investors who did not have the time to enter into any transactions. The entire matter is under discussion between the board and the brokers.

Three brokerage firms were not permitted on the floor today. They are the Louis Klappas, the Touch Share brokers and the AL Pro Choice,

    [06] RUSSIA

Russia has seized three northern Chechen districtsin a drive to seal off the region which, according to Moscow harbours Islamic rebels.

It was not clear whether the new phase would include a concerted advance of ground troops into the rebel-controlled areas in central and southern Chechnya, where military experts foresee huge casualties, or a string of limited operations and more of the bombing already carried out by Russian warplanes.

Tens of thousands of people died in Russia's initial attempt to subdue Chechnya's independence drive through military force in 1994-96, which ended in Moscow's defeat.

The demonstrators were demanding increased freedom of movement in the northern Kosovo town, divided by the Ibar river into Serb and Albanian areas.

Tensions between the ethnic Albanian majority and Serbs still run high across Kosovo in the wake of years of Serb repression of Albanians. NATO waged an 11-week bombing campaign earlier this year to drive Yugoslav forces out of the province.
