    [02] Babies Hospital

An unprecedented case of mistreatment of children is been investigated by police. Two boys and three girls, brothers and sisters, aged from four months to six years old, were last night taken to Makarios hospital. The children were filthy and had not eaten for at least three days. They were examined by state pathologist Eleni Antoniou and doctors at the hospital, who said that they had suffered no injuries. One of the doctors said that the childrens' condition had improved but could not say when they would be discharged. In statements to our station, the director of the welfare department Evanthia Papasavva said that the case of the children was well known to the department and they were provided with a grant. She added tha the problem with lack of care for the children surfaced in the last three days, folllowing a family quarrel. After a court order, the parents took the children to the Makarios hospital, where they are been treated. The welfare department are also discussing with the family, to establish whether it will be able to take care of the children.

    [03] Annan Cyprus

UN Secretary General Kofi Anan and Austrian foreign minister Benita Ferrero Valdner, yesterday discussed the Cyprus problem in a meeting in Vienna. They also exchanged views on developments in the Middle East, security and re-building in war-torn Afghanistan and continuing tension between India and Pakistan. Commenting on the physical and diplomatic isolation of Palestinian president Yiasser Arafat by the Israelis, Kofi Anan said that security measures should not be independent of efforts to resume negotiations. The UN Secretary General said that Arafat should be given time and space to be able to act freely and communicate with his people.

    [04] Clerides Pavlinov

President Clerides today briefed Russian ambassador Vladimir Pavlinov on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue. The Russian ambassador stated that he is briefed regularly on the Cyprus issue, but refrained from saying anything on the substance, because of an embargo on statements during talks. President Clerides and Ambassador Pavlinov also discussed issues concerning problems arising with Cyprus-Russia bilateral agreements, because of the EU accession course and harmonisation with the aqui communitaire. Vladimir Pavlinov gave no details on the nature of the problems but he said that they mainly concern financial and cultural issues.

    [05] FIR Violations

The Cyprus Republic made representations to the United Nations, demanding an end to the continuous violations of Cyprus air space by Turkish fighter jets. In an official letter to Kofi Anan, the Cyprus charge d'affaires at the United Nations, Yiorgos Casoulides made a complaint on mass violations of Cyprus airspace and the Nicosia FIR, that happened from last October till December. It is noted that these illegal actions, violate international law and Security Council resolutions and have to be terminated. In the letter, which was circulated as a General Assembly and Security Council document, it is also stressed that Turkish violations, coincided with the start of direct settlement talks in Nicosia, between President Clerides and turkish-cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    [06] Phone companies

Foreign companies are showing great interest in Cyprus telecommunication in light of the opening up of the market to private investment because of accession to the European Union. The telecommunications and post offices regulator Vasos Pyrgos, said that Vodaphone and Greek company Kosmo-ote have already requested a briefing on the progress of the liberalization process. The two companies have also expressed interest in taking part in a competition, when it is declared, to obtain a license for providing telecommunication services. In an interview with Reuters, Pyrgos said that Cyprus will launch its liberalization process by the end of the year.

    [07] Mideast wrap

At least two people were seriously injured today in an explosion inside a car in central Israel, and police said they suspected a suicide bomber was behind the blast.

The explosion near the Israeli Arab town of Taibeh, close to the West Bank, sent smoke billowing up from the car, a witness told Israel's Army Radio. Helicopters later flew overhead.

Israeli-Palestinian violence has surged in the past two weeks after a more than three-week lull.

Israeli security forces have been on particularly high alert since a bomb exploded on a main shopping street in Jerusalem earlier this week, killing the suicide bomber and an elderly Israeli man and injuring scores of people.

Palestinians have staged at least four attacks on cities in Israel in the past two weeks and Israel has sent troops on raids into Palestinian areas, including one in which four members of the militant group Hamas were killed.

The Palestinians also blame Israel for another blast that killed a leading militant.

    [08] Bush wrap

President Bush warned tens of thousands of Osama bin Laden followers around the world were "ticking time bombs", while Afghanistan's new leader said he wanted U.S. forces to stay in his country as long "as the war against terrorism is on".

Bush, using his State of the Union speech to set a path for winning the war on terrorism, singled out Iraq, Iran and North Korea as pursuing weapons of mass destruction, calling them "an axis of evil" that could attack U.S. allies or blackmail America.

Bush cited new intelligence saying tens of thousands of followers of Osama bin Laden, the elusive chief suspect in September 11 attacks on the United States, were trained in terrorism tactics in Afghanistan since 1996 and were spread through more than 60 nations.

As for where the war on terrorism goes next, Bush did not identify countries except to say Washington was helping train armed forces in the Philippines to pursue militants and the Navy is patrolling the coast of Africa to block weapons to Somalia.

    [09] Nigeria missing

The Nigerian Red Cross said it was searching desperately for over one thousand one hundred people still missing in the city of Lagos three days after deadly explosions at a military armoury. The official death toll from Sunday's tragedy stands at well over 600. Newspapers said the final toll from a catastrophe that damaged a huge number of residential and public buldings could be over 2,000. Most of the missing were children aged between four and 11. The Red Cross was also looking after 15 children separated from their parents after exploding bombs triggered a mass stampede in the metropolis of over 10 million people.

    [10] Tailer

Gender bender pop idol Boy George took a time machine back to the Eighties with the world premiere of his musical "Taboo" which recreates a London clubland packed with outlandish cross-dressers.

With actor Euan Morton memorably playing his foppish younger self, Boy George transported theatregoers back to the halcyon days of the decade when his group, Culture Club, topped charts around the world and sold 20 million albums.

The show, for which he wrote the music and lyrics, was staged at the tiny 300-seat 'Venue', billed as the first new stage to open in London's theatreland for more than 70 years.
