[01] Denktash on EU coordinator and EU membership

According to KIBRIS (25.1.96) the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktash, yesterday had a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Cyprus, Mr David Madden.

After the meeting Denktash told the journalists that during the meeting they discussed, inter alia, the issue of the appointment of an EU Cyprus coordinator/representative.

He retierated his opposition to the appointment of a coordinator from the EU member countries, alleging that any coordinator to be appointed from an institution where Greece is a member will have powers and authorities that will not be in favour of the Turkish Cypriots.

Denktash further said that they have yet to receive a Greek Cypriot reply regarding Cyprus' entry into the EU.

Denktash claimed that his conditional consent to EU membership, made to the Greek Cypriot side through US Presidential Envoy Richard Beattie, is yet to be replied.

In his proposal, Denktash demanded equality, sovereignty for the Turkish Cypriots and the continuation of the Guarantee Agreement. If these conditions were accepted, only then he would agree to Cyprus' entry as a whole into the EU, he said.

"We have yet to receive a positive reply", he said "we have received a negative answer and now Cassoulides comes and says that the 1977 and 1979 high level agreements are not enough."

Denktash further alleged that the moment the EU gave the green light to the Greek Cypriots, the Greek side started avoiding the negotiation table. (MY)

Meanwhile KIBRIS (25.1.95) claims that BRitish High Commissioner, David Madden, when asked to comment on his statement made to RIK during a recent interview regarding the EU coordinator, he was equivocal and did not give a clear answer.

He only said that the issue was under consideration and was being debated. (MY)

[02] Extremists destroy the British coat of arms in occupied Nicosia

According to KIBRIS (25.1.96) unidentified rightwing extremists, holding nationalist grey wolf flags and rightwing idealist banners, destroyed the British coat of arms in occupied Nicosia, at the premises of the former court house.

The culprits attacked Denktash's "police" who wanted to stop them.

Following a "policeman's" intervention they raised their three crescent flags and the banners and run away. (MY)

[03] Pseudostate represented at Tourism Fair in Vienna

According to KIBRIS (25.1.95) the occupied area is being represetned at the four-day Ferien 96 Tourism Fair in Vienna. KIBRIS adds that the occupied area is taking part in the fair with its own stand, comprising four operating companies, Intour Pegasus and Oger Tours. (MY) EF/SK
