Denktash left occupied Tymbou airport aboard a medically equipped plane and accompanied by Dr. Sait Kenan, his private doctor. Mrs Denktash, her children Serdar, secretary general of the Democratic Party, and Deger Denktash, her daughter-in law Mesude Denktash, and the "presidential secretary" also accompanied Denktash to Ankara. A team of doctors headed by professor Dervis Orak, who had come from Ankara, also left the island.[02] Ankara says EU cannot be party to Cyprus talksAccording to ANATOLIA news agency (1510 hours, 4/3/96), Turkey said on Monday that the European Union (EU) could not be a side in talks within the framework of the United Nations concerning Cyprus.Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel told at a news conference that EU's representative to Cyprus Federico Di Roberto was told that Turkey did not foresee a new process to be initiated concerning the solution of the Cyprus problem. Akbel said officials told Di Roberto that direct talks without precondition was the best way to find a solution to the Cyprus problem and stressed the necessity of setting up a bilateral security atmosphere and recognizing the equal and legal status of Turkish Cypriots by the third sides. Akbel also said Di Roberto was recalled that within the framework of legal regulations in 1960, Cyprus could not be a full member of the European Union before Turkey's membership. Di Roberto met Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Onur Oymen and his deputy Inal Batu, after wrapping up his contacts in Cyprus and in Athens. [03] February inflation rate in Turkey at 4.5 percentAccording to TRT, (1000 hours, 4/3/96) the inflation rate for February in Turkey was 4.5 percent. Together with the increase registered last month, the annual inflation rate stands at 77.5 percent.According to a statement issued by the State Statistics Insitute, consumer prices rose 4.5 percent in Februry, while wholesale prices registered an increase of 5.8 percent. The consumer price index increased by 77.5 percent and the wholesale price index by 63 percent since February last year. [04] Chicken production threatened by diseasesAccording to KIBRIS (5.2.96) chicken production in the occupied area is threatened by various diseases. The paper says that because these diseases cannot be put under control there is a big loss in production.Chicken breeders claim that a 25% of day-old chicks that they buy from private as well as from the so-called state hatcheries carry diseases. A chicken breeder from the occupied Ayios Epiktitos village said that in the last six months only he was forced to destroy 20 thousand day-old chicks because they were infected by the disease "Marek." Similar complaints come from various chicken farm owners in the occupied area. (M.Y.) [05] DYP-ANAP protocol refers to CyprusAccording to Turkish Daily News (4/3/96), the Motherland Party - True Path Party Protocol, in the framework of the Foreign Policy issues, refers to the Cyprus problem as follows: "Turkey will make every effort for the solution of the Cyprus problem according to the interests of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and through a just and lasting settlement." |
