[01] IPU Council adopts Committee report on Cyprus

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (15:30 hours, 20.4.96), the Interparliamentary Union (IPU) Conference held in Istanbul has ended. The 95th IPU Council adopted a report on the issue of Cyprus.

The IPU Council, which convened within the framework of the IPU Conference, adopted the report submitted by the IPU follow-up committee on Cyprus. The report noted that the statement issued by Rauf Denktash to the effect that he is ready to resume negotiations is encouraging and said that it expected Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides to display the same approach.

Expressing support for the goodwill mission of the UN Secretary General, the report also said that the set of ideas continued to constitute the basis for the resolution of the Cyprus issue. The report noted that the fact that there were no further developments on the confidence-building-measures increased the tension on the island. (Illegal Bayrak, 10:30 hours, 20.4.96).
