[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Local papers on Simitis' visitThe Turkish Cypriot papers of today report on Greek Premier Simitis' visit to Cyprus under the following headlines:KIBRIS: "Visit with champagne". ORTAM: "The expected joint communique after the Greek Premier's visit was issued - The Greek Cypriot side is ready for direct talks." VATAN: "Simitis, who concluded his contacts in the Greek Cypriot sector, left the island - Simitis said: We accept every initiative for the solution of the Cyprus problem". YENI DEMOCRAT: "Simitis was given the supreme decoration of the order of Makarios III - Simitis said: Makarios' struggle constitutes an example". BIRLIK: "Simitis said he will follow Makarios path." (EF) [02] Denktash back in CyprusYENI DEMOKRAT (3.10.96) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has returned to the island and in a statement upon his arrival he said that he comes back from Ankara "having received the guarantees he had asked for." The European Union, he continued, has informed them that since it does not recognize the "TRNC", it will not receive him as "TRNC President" and will not talk with him. He claimed that the "voices" and "evaluations" from Europe indicate that Europe is influenced by Greece's "blackmail", as he put it.He further said that Ankara is watching day by day, hour by hour what the Greeks and the Greek Cypriots are doing and added: "There is no preoccupation. Ankara has comfortably given me the guarantee I wanted. The guarantee is: Turkey and Greece have equal rights over Cyprus." (EF) [03] Eroglu: Situation worse than everBIRLIK (3.10.96) reports that so-called Prime Minister Dervish Eroglu had a meeting with representatives of the "Union of Turkish Cypriot Journalists". Eroglu stated that "never before were they faced with so many problems as today. The economy is bankrupt". Furthermore, he said, external pressure has increased. (EF) |
