[01] Assembly rejects motions against Erbakan

According to TRT (1700 hours, 16/10/96) the interpellation motions submitted against Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan and the Council of Ministers with regard to their foreign policy implementations have been rejected at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA) with 256 votes in favor and 275 against.

The three separate interpellation motions against Erbakan and the Council of Ministers wer submitted by Motherland Party, Democratic Left Party and Republican People's Party deputies.

[02] Denktash on UNSC chairman remarks on latest incidents

According to illegal Bayrak Radio (1530 hours, 10/10/96) Rauf Denktash has said that the demonstrations and "attacks" the Greek Cypriots are carrying out along the so-called borders are closing the door to negotiations.

Denktash assessed for illegal Turkish Cypriot news agency a statement issued by Martinez Blanco, the Honduran delegate and current chairman of the UN Security Council, in connection with the latest incidents. Denktash alleged that what is important is to prevent "attacks" on the "border" and that the issue of drawing back the troops which are very close to each other on two sides of the "border" is still unresolved.

Denktash recalled that in his statement, the UN Security Council chairman actually said that the necessary steps must be taken to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and that the two sides must sit down and talk.

[03] Turkish soldier accidentally wounded by own gun

KIBRIS (17.10.96) reports that a Turkish occupation soldier was seriously wounded yesterday near Ayios Kassianos area when his gun accidentaly went off while he was joking with a fellow soldier.

KISBRIS says that the incident happened at around 15:30 hours yesterday.

The soldier, who was wounded in the chest, was rushed to hospital and underwent operation.

It is reported that he is in a critical condition.

[04] Denktash claims they are advised to apply to the EU separately

In an exclusive statement to YENIDUZEN (17.10.96) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had declared that some EU member states had proposed that the Turkish Cypriots should separately apply for EU membership.

"We could do this if they accept our status" claimed Denktash.

Denktash also claimed that "unless an agreement is reached regarding the Cyprus problem, Cyprus' accession to the EU is not possible." He added that some of the EU member-states had told this clearly to the Greek Cypriots.

Referring to his recent visit to Germany Denktash said that he was satisfied with the visit and that he was able to see the facts. He said: "I have seen during my visit to Germany that Clerides continues contacts behind the scenes with the EU and signs protocols and while doing this he is saying Sir we want federation but a european style federation; we are not for a federation that envisages special rights to the Turks. Clerides convinced the EU that this is a legitimate demand. This is a terrible thing. Our people have to understand this. What are the federations in Europe? They are like municipalities, they have administrative divisions and within these administrative divisions there are organs that have authority but people are free to go and settle anywhere, or go and shop anywhere, everybody has freedom of movement, people are only equal before the law. That is, Germany is for the Germans. There are adminstrative divisions within Germany. Cyprus is not for the Greek Cypriots so that they can go around and settle as they please. It is a place of partnership; because they have destroyed this partnership. We have to think ways how they will not be able to destroy the new partnership that will be formed. We believe that if the Greek Cypriots do not intend to destroy this partnership, then they should not have tried to dupe the EU members by saying that they want a federation suitable for Europe, thus trying to remove measures that will preclude the destruction of the new partnership."

As for the European suggestion that the Turkish Cypriots should apply to the EU separately, Denktash said: "They are telling us to apply separately. There are people who tell us, apply separately and join separtely. We can do so, if they recognize our status; that is if they recognize our founding partnership, equal sovereignty rights. If Europe changes its decisions and recognizes us this status, then everything is easy".
