[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkey opposes deployment of Long - Range Missiles in CyprusAccording to Anatolia agency (14.50 hours, 9/12/96) Turkey reacted "angrily" on Monday to the Cyprus Government's efforts to purchase long range missiles, capable of attaining Turkey."No one should expect that Turkey may tolerate the deployment of long range missiles, threatening its security,"Foreign Ministry spokesman Omer Akbel said during a press conference for foreign reporters. "This kind of efforts will not contribute in any way to the development of confidence and peace efforts in Cyprus" Akbel claimed when asked about the Cyprus Government's plans to get those missiles from Moscow. Akbel declared that Moscow "knew very well" Turkey's position on the issue. "During our contacts with Russian officials we underline the fact that armament efforts on the island will not contribute to a climate good for a peaceful solution," he added. As for Greece's Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos' threat on Sunday that his country would use its veto to an enlargement of the European union (EU) if EU doesn't accept Cyprus as full member, Akbel said: "A union in Europe can not be based on the negative attitudes or blackmail, but on cooperation and goodwill." [02] Denktash says Turks not frightened with arms buildupAccording to illegal Bayrak Radio (11.30 hours, 9/12/96) Denktash has said that the Cyprus problem can be resolved only if the two sides want a solution. However, he claimed, the Greek Cypriots do not want a solution.Denktash returned from Instabul where he attended the celerations marking the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Cypriot Cultural Association. In a statement at occupied Tymbou airport, Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriots do not want the Cyprus problem to be resolved, and that since 1960, they have preferred to be considered the ligitimate Cyprus government rather than reach an agreement with the Turkish Cypriots. Denktash said: "The Cyprus problem cannot be resolved through pressure. Clerides cannot frighten us through his arms buildup". Denktash alleged that "if he is wise, Clerides will not play such a dangerous game". [03] Turkish Cypriots claim Greeks tried to pull down Turkish flag.According to illegal Bayrak Radio (16.30 hours, 9/12/96) at around 0400 hours on Monday morning, three Greek Cypriots infiltrated the occupied area in the Nicosia Grammar School region, and tried to pull down the Turkish flag from the pole in front of the guard booth and that in their attempt, they broke the flagpole. It is further claimed that when the guards fired warning shots, the three Greek Cypriots fled toward the Greek Cypriot National Guard positions without taking the flag.The so-called Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense has lodged a "protest" with the UN peace force about the incident. A written statement issued by the"ministry" says that the "TRNC authorities" are carefully monitoring these acts and especially the "suspicious" movements taking place along the contact line at nights. In addition, according to TRT Television Network (18.00 hours, 10/9/96), the Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement claiming, inter alia: "This latest incident shows that the Greek Cypriot side did not learn any lesson form the regrettable incidents that occurred on the island last summer, and proves once again that the Greek Cypriot side is respondible for the increasing tension on the island". [04] Inal Batu in the occupied area for talksAccording to KIBRIS (11.12.96) Turkish Foreign Ministry deputy Under - Secretary Ambassador Inal Batu arrived in the occuped area yesterday for a two-day visit.Speaking at the occupied Tymbou airport Ambassador Inal Batu has said that the Cyprus problem will be the centre of attention at the highest level during the first months of 1997. "It will be on the agenda" he said. He described his two - day visit to the occupied area as "having preparatory character for the forthcoming intensive efforts which will be on the agenda on the first months of 1997". Stating that the Cyprus government's effort to become EU member, its effort to drift away from the UN parameters and its increased arming efforts have brought the Cyprus problem to a dangerous and really critical stage, Ambassador Inal Batu said that the political evaluation between Turkey and the occupied area will continue and as it continues it will also increase. Batu talking to reporters said: "This time the situation is really critical. We are at a serious stage. For this reason joint evaluations in Nicosia and Ankara will increasingly continue". Saying that because of the creation of a single pole in the world, the US and Britain are acting more easily Inal Batu has informed that during his contacts stress will be given to the Cyprus government's EU membership process "despite the Turkish side's objections" as he put it, the watering down of the guarantees, the efforts to drift away from the UN parameters and the Cyprus governmet's effort to strengthen its defences. [05] Abdullah Catli involved in Adali's murder?ORTAM (11.12.96) reports under banner headlines "Did Catli played a role in Adali's murder? "and quotes mainland "NOKTA" magazine (8-14/12/96) in which a mainland woman claims that while in the occupied area in October 1993 she was interrogated and cross-examined by Turkish Mafia boss Abdullah Catli who was a member of the notorious right wing Grey Wolves group, who had massacred people in cold blood and who was tried and condemned to death in absentia.He was on Interpol's list. Abdullah Catli died last month in a traffic accident in Susurluk, Turkey, while travelling wiht Turkish MP and the Chief of the Police Academies in Turkey. In the light of what the woman said to NOKTA, ORTAM wonders whether Abdullah Catli had played a role in Adali's murder on 6 July 1996 in occupied Nicosia. MY/EF/YH |
